Calculating Flooring Coverage, Boxes, and Cut Waste
Hardwood planks, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), laminate, and ceramic tiles are packaged and sold in standardized boxes covering a specified square footage. Proper estimation requires adding an appropriate cutting waste factor to cover perimeter trims, staggered joints, and pattern matching.

Worked Example
A room measuring 18 ft by 14 ft (252 sq ft) installed with laminate flooring packaged at 22.5 sq ft per box with a 10% waste allowance:
1. Required Gross Area = 252 sq ft × 1.10 = 277.2 sq ft
2. Box Calculation = 277.2 / 22.5 = 12.32 → 13 boxes (rounded up to whole box)
3. Actual Purchased Coverage = 13 × 22.5 = 292.5 sq ft
Assumptions & Limitations
Straight plank installations generally require 7%–10% waste. Diagonal layouts, herringbone designs, or irregular room angles with alcoves require 15%–20% cutting margin. Package coverage is user-editable to match manufacturer box labels.
