Calculation Results
Calculation uses geometric slope multiplier for a 6:12 roof pitch with 1-foot eave overhangs.
Roof Pitch Multipliers, Squares, and Shingle Bundles
Roof surface area exceeds building ground footprint due to pitch slope. In the construction industry, roofing materials are measured in Squares (1 Square = 100 square feet). Standard asphalt architectural shingles are packaged at 3 bundles per square.
Core Mathematical Formulas
- Pitch Multiplier:
Multiplier = √(144 + Pitch Rise²) / 12 - Actual Sloped Area:
Area = (Footprint Length × Width) × Pitch Multiplier - Roofing Squares:
Raw Squares = Area / 100 - Bundles with Waste:
Total Bundles = CEILING(Raw Squares × (1 + Waste%) × 3) - Underlayment Rolls:
Rolls = CEILING((Squares × (1 + Waste%)) / Roll Capacity (assumes standard 4-square roll))
Worked Example
A house with a 2,000 sq ft ground footprint, a 6:12 roof pitch (multiplier = 1.118), and a 10% cut waste allowance:
1. Sloped Roof Area = 2,000 sq ft × 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft
2. Gross Roofing Squares with 10% Waste = (2,236 / 100) × 1.10 = 24.60 Squares
3. Shingle Bundles Needed = 24.60 × 3 = 74 bundles
4. Underlayment (4-sq rolls) = 24.60 / 4 = 7 rolls
Assumptions & Limitations
Material yield assumptions (3 bundles per square, 4 squares per roll of underlayment) represent standard planning estimates and vary by manufacturer and shingle profile. Estimates exclude starter strips, ridge cap shingles, and drip edge metal perimeters.
